How to blur faces in photos on iPhone

Updated

Short answer

The iPhone Photos app has no automatic face blur. The quickest free option is the FaceHush web tool in Safari: open it, pick a photo, and every face is found and covered on your phone, with nothing uploaded. For video, batches and saved faces, use the FaceHush app.

Step by step

  1. 1

Open the free tool in Safari

Open the FaceHush blur tool (linked on this page) on your iPhone. It runs in the browser, so there is nothing to install.

  2. 2

    Choose a photo

Tap Choose a photo and pick an image from your library. The photo stays on your iPhone; it is never uploaded.

  3. 3

    Check the faces

Every face FaceHush finds is covered automatically. Tap a face to keep it visible, or drag a box over any face that was missed.

  4. 4

    Pick a style and save

Choose blur, pixelate, emoji or a solid block, set the strength, then tap Download and save the image to Photos.

Why the Photos app is not enough

Apple's Photos editor lets you crop, adjust and draw with Markup, but it has no tool that finds faces and blurs them for you. Drawing over faces by hand is slow and easy to get wrong, and a thin scribble can leave a face recognisable.

An automatic tool finds every face first, so you only decide who stays visible. That is faster for group shots and much harder to get wrong.

Option 1: the free FaceHush web tool

The FaceHush web tool runs face detection inside Safari using an on-device model. Your photo is processed by your iPhone's own processor and never sent to a server.

It is ideal for the occasional photo: one image at a time, four styles, and a download at full resolution. Downloads are re-encoded, so location and camera metadata from the original are not carried over.

Option 2: the FaceHush app

If you hide faces often, the FaceHush app is faster. It censors every face in a photo automatically, works offline, and needs no account.

  • Blur and mosaic for video, with faces tracked as people move
  • Several photos at once (3 on Free, up to 50 with Pro)
  • A private face library that recognises people you always hide or always keep
  • Mosaic, blur, emoji and solid cover for photos

Make sure the face is really hidden

Light blur or small mosaic blocks can leave a face recognisable, especially to software. For anything sensitive, use the strongest setting, a solid block or an emoji, and check hair, tattoos and name badges too.

Questions

Is there a built-in way to blur faces on iPhone?

No. Photos can crop, adjust and draw with Markup, but it cannot find and blur faces automatically. Use a dedicated tool such as the free FaceHush web tool or the FaceHush app.

Does the FaceHush web tool upload my photo?

No. Face detection and censoring run inside your browser on your iPhone. The photo is never sent to FaceHush or anyone else.

Can I blur faces in a video on iPhone?

Yes, with the FaceHush app. It censors every face in a clip, tracks them as people move, and lets you tap a person to keep them visible. Free clips are up to 15 seconds at 720p; Pro handles up to 10 minutes at 1080p.

Is it free?

The web tool is free. The app is free to download; Pro is US$0.99 a month or US$9.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial.
