How to blur faces in photos on Android
Updated
Short answer
Most Android gallery editors can draw over a photo but cannot find and blur faces automatically. Install FaceHush from Google Play, or use the free FaceHush web tool in Chrome: every face is detected and covered on your phone, with nothing uploaded.
Step by step
- 1
Install FaceHush or open the web tool
Get FaceHush free on Google Play, or open the free FaceHush web tool in Chrome for a one-off photo.
- 2
Pick your photos
Choose up to 3 photos at once on Free (up to 50 with Pro). Your gallery is read only when you pick something.
- 3
Review the faces
Every face is censored by default. Tap a person to keep them visible; tap again to hide them.
- 4
Export
Choose mosaic, blur, emoji or solid, then save the censored copy back to your gallery.
What the built-in editors can and cannot do
Google Photos and most manufacturers' galleries include Markup or drawing tools. You can scribble over a face, but you have to find every face yourself and cover it completely, which is slow for group photos.
FaceHush does the finding for you with on-device face detection, then lets you decide who stays visible.
Why on-device matters
Many online blur tools upload your photo to a server to process it. If the photo shows children, sources or protesters, that upload is the risk you were trying to avoid.
FaceHush processes everything on the phone. It works in airplane mode, needs no account, and has no server that receives your media.
Video on Android
FaceHush also censors faces in video. Every face is hidden by default and tracked through the clip; tap a person to keep them visible. Free clips are up to 15 seconds at 720p, and Pro raises that to 10 minutes at 1080p with no watermark.
Questions
Does Google Photos have a face blur tool?
Not an automatic one. You can draw over faces with Markup, but it will not find or blur faces for you.
Does FaceHush work offline on Android?
Yes. Detection, censoring and export all happen on the phone, so it works without a connection.
Will the original photo be changed?
No. FaceHush saves a new censored copy and leaves the original in your gallery untouched.
Which Android phones are supported?
FaceHush is on Google Play for modern Android phones. The free web tool works in current versions of Chrome on Android as well.
